Walt Disney World officially opened to the public on 01/10/1971 in Bay Lake and Lake Buena Vista, Florida, introducing a large-scale entertainment resort developed by The Walt Disney Company. The project was announced by Walt Disney in 1965, but he died in December 1966 before construction began. The development was overseen by his brother Roy O. Disney, who postponed his retirement to complete the project and dedicated the resort in Walt’s name. The opening marked the debut of the Magic Kingdom theme park, along with two resort hotels, Disney’s Contemporary Resort and Disney’s Polynesian Village Resort. At the time of opening, the resort covered approximately 27,000 acres (about 110 square kilometers), making it one of the largest recreational developments in the United States. The Magic Kingdom featured attractions such as Cinderella Castle, Jungle Cruise, Haunted Mansion, and “it’s a small world.” The opening day ticket price for admission to the park was $3.50 for adults. In its first year of operation, Walt Disney World recorded millions of visitors, establishing itself as a major tourism destination in Florida. The project involved extensive infrastructure development, including road systems and utilities, supported by the Reedy Creek Improvement District, a special governing jurisdiction created in 1967 to facilitate the resort’s construction and operation. Walt Disney World continued to expand in subsequent years, with EPCOT Center opening in 1982 and Disney-MGM Studios (now Disney’s Hollywood Studios) opening in 1989. #WaltDisneyWorld #DisneyParks #Florida #ThemeParks #DisneyHistory
