Star Wars: The Force Awakens was released on 18/12/2015, marking the first installment of the Star Wars sequel trilogy and the first film in the franchise produced under The Walt Disney Company. Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film debuted in theaters worldwide following its premiere in Los Angeles on 14/12/2015. It was produced by Lucasfilm Ltd., which Disney had acquired in October 2012 for approximately $4.05 billion. The release came ten years after Star Wars: Episode III – Revenge of the Sith (2005), ending a decade-long gap in the main saga.
The film introduced new central characters including Rey (Daisy Ridley), Finn (John Boyega), and Kylo Ren (Adam Driver), while also featuring returning actors such as Harrison Ford, Carrie Fisher, and Mark Hamill. Set approximately 30 years after Return of the Jedi (1983), the story follows the rise of the First Order and the search for Luke Skywalker. The production budget has been reported at around $245 million. Upon release, the film recorded strong commercial performance, earning over $2 billion at the global box office, making it the highest-grossing film of 2015. In the United States and Canada, it became the highest-grossing film of all time at the time of its release.
The release was accompanied by extensive promotional campaigns and a wide theatrical rollout. The film received multiple award nominations, including five Academy Award nominations at the 88th Academy Awards, in categories such as Best Film Editing, Best Original Score, and Best Visual Effects. Its distribution was handled by Walt Disney Studios Motion Pictures, marking a transition from previous Star Wars films, which were distributed by 20th Century Fox.
