The Sleeping Beauty Castle Walkthrough attraction opened on 29/04/1957 at Disneyland Park in Anaheim, California, offering guests a detailed, walk-through experience inside the park’s central castle. The attraction was designed to promote Disney’s upcoming animated feature Sleeping Beauty, which would be released in 1959. It marked one of the earliest examples of a themed walkthrough attraction in a Disney park, combining physical sets, dioramas, and storytelling elements.
Located within Sleeping Beauty Castle, which had already been a visual centerpiece of Disneyland since the park’s opening in 1955, the walkthrough featured a sequence of scenes retelling the story of Princess Aurora. Guests passed through narrow corridors and chambers showcasing hand-crafted dioramas, illuminated displays, and narrative text. The visual style drew inspiration from the film’s artistic direction, particularly the work of background artist Eyvind Earle, whose distinctive medieval-inspired designs influenced the attraction’s aesthetic.
The walkthrough operated for several decades before closing in 2001. It was later restored and reopened on 27/11/2008 with updated effects and accessibility improvements, including alternate viewing options. The reopening preserved the original concept while incorporating modern lighting, sound design, and interactive elements to enhance the guest experience.
