On February 15, 1967, approximately 2,500 women organized by Women Strike for Peace demonstrated outside the office of United States Secretary of Defense Robert S. McNamara at the Pentagon. The demonstration occurred during a period of increasing public opposition to American military involvement in the Vietnam War. Women Strike for Peace had emerged as an organization concerned with international security, nuclear weapons, and the consequences of military conflict. By gathering at the Pentagon, participants directed their protest toward the institution responsible for administering United States defense policy and military operations. The demonstration reflected the growing participation of women's organizations in national political debate and contributed to the Pentagon's emergence as a prominent location for antiwar activism during the late 1960s.
