On December 7, 1941, Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor transformed the strategic circumstances under which the Pentagon was being built. Construction had begun approximately three months earlier, when the United States was preparing for the possibility of entering World War II. Following the attack and the country's subsequent entry into the conflict, pressure to complete the headquarters increased substantially. General Brehon B. Somervell demanded rapid progress so that extensive office space could become available for the growing War Department. Architectural planning, structural engineering, and construction proceeded simultaneously, sometimes requiring adjustments when building operations advanced faster than completed design drawings. The project demonstrated how wartime requirements could reshape construction schedules, resource allocation, and administrative infrastructure. The Pentagon consequently developed as a major component of the United States military's expanding organizational capacity.
