In October 2025, a dispute developed between the United States Department of Defense and major news organizations following the introduction of new press credential requirements under Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth. The directives restricted reporters' ability to gather and publish information outside the department's approved reporting framework. According to the document, nearly all regularly accredited Pentagon news organizations declined to accept the new requirements and forfeited their press credentials. The organizations included ABC News, NBC News, CBS News, Fox News, CNN, Reuters, the Associated Press, Bloomberg News, The New York Times, The Washington Post, and several other national and international publications. One America News Network was identified as the only organization among the regular Pentagon press corps that accepted the conditions. The dispute marked a significant development in relations between the Department of Defense and journalists covering United States military affairs.
