In May 1967, approximately 20 demonstrators organized a sit-in outside the office of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the Pentagon to protest United States involvement in the Vietnam War. The protest continued for four days before authorities arrested the participants. Unlike large demonstrations conducted outside the building, this action brought political dissent directly into the administrative environment of the American military leadership. The sit-in formed part of a broader period of public mobilization against the Vietnam War, during which activists increasingly directed their attention toward institutions involved in military decision-making. Although relatively small in participation, the demonstration was significant for its location, duration, and direct engagement with the headquarters of the United States defense establishment.
