In 2025, Tesla introduced the Model Y L, a long-wheelbase, six-seat version of the Model Y aimed at buyers needing more passenger space. The model was first confirmed through China’s Ministry of Industry and Information Technology filings in July 2025, before Tesla formally launched it in China on 19/08/2025. Reuters reported a starting price of 339,000 yuan, about $47,200.
The Model Y L added a longer body, extended wheelbase, and a three-row, six-seat cabin layout. The configuration used two seats in each row, giving it a 2-2-2 seating arrangement. Tesla positioned the vehicle as a roomier family-focused version of its best-selling SUV, especially for China’s competitive electric SUV market.
According to Tesla’s Hong Kong specifications page, the Model Y L offered seating for up to six adults, a WLTP range of 681 km, dual-motor all-wheel drive, a 16-inch center touchscreen, an 8-inch second-row touchscreen, and 2,539 liters of cargo capacity. China-market reports also listed a 751 km CLTC range. Deliveries in China were scheduled to begin in September 2025.
Why This Moment Matters: The Model Y L gave Tesla a more spacious family SUV without creating an entirely new vehicle line. Its China-first launch also showed how Tesla was adapting the Model Y to local market preferences, where larger rear cabins and six-seat electric SUVs had become more common.
