In 2000, Martin Eberhard and Marc Tarpenning sold NuvoMedia to Gemstar-TV Guide International for $187 million, ending the first major startup chapter of their partnership. NuvoMedia, based in Mountain View, California, had developed the Rocket eBook, one of the early dedicated electronic reading devices released before e-readers became mainstream. The deal came during a period of active experimentation in digital publishing. Gemstar acquired NuvoMedia alongside SoftBook Press, bringing two early e-book hardware companies under one owner. NuvoMedia’s Rocket eBook had been aimed at consumer reading, while SoftBook’s device was often positioned more toward business and professional use. After the acquisition, Gemstar combined the technologies into its e-book group and later marketed RCA-branded eBook readers. For Eberhard and Tarpenning, the sale provided both financial return and practical experience from building a hardware and software product company through to acquisition. Their work at NuvoMedia involved consumer electronics, battery-powered devices, digital content distribution, and startup fundraising. Those lessons became part of the business background they carried forward after 2000. Although their later work would be associated with Tesla Motors, the 2000 NuvoMedia sale is best understood as the close of their first shared technology venture. It showed that their partnership could move from product idea to commercial device and then to acquisition within about three years. Why This Moment Matters: The NuvoMedia sale gave Eberhard and Tarpenning capital, credibility, and startup operating experience before their next company. It also preserved Rocket eBook’s place in the early history of commercial e-reading devices. #MartinEberhard #MarcTarpenning #RocketEBook #GemstarTVGuide #EBookHistory #StartupHistory #TechnologyHistory
