In 1931, Spain marked a monumental shift in its political landscape as the period of Spain under the Restoration came to an end. This period was characterized by the rule of King Alfonso XIII, who had been on the throne since 1886. However, mounting political and social unrest, coupled with the economic turmoil caused by the Great Depression, led to a growing dissatisfaction with the monarchy. In response to the pressures, municipal elections were held in April, which resulted in significant victories for Republican and Socialist candidates in major cities across the country. The King's attempts to form a new government failed, and on April 14, he resigned, effectively bringing an end to the Restoration. This momentous change set the stage for the establishment of the Second Spanish Republic, which aimed to restore democratic values and implement social and political reforms. It marked a turning point in Spain's history, leading to a period of renewed hope, but also deep divisions that would eventually culminate in the Spanish Civil War. #Spain #Restoration #MonarchyEnds #SecondSpanishRepublic
