In Spain, the Battle of Atapuerca marked a significant turning point in history. Navarrese and Leonese forces clashed near Atapuerca, Province of Burgos. Tragically, García Sánchez III, the king of Navarre, and his tutor Fortún Sánchez were killed in the battle. Following their deaths, García Sánchez III's son, Sancho IV of Peñalén, ascended the throne as the new king of Pamplona. However, due to his young age, he was placed under the regency of Stephanie, the Queen of Navarre. The aftermath of the battle also resulted in territorial changes as Leon annexed Navarrese territories south of the Ebro. This event had lasting implications for the balance of power in the region and set the stage for future conflicts and alliances. #BattleofAtapuerca #Spain #Navarre #Leon #SanchoIVofPeñalén #StephanieofNavarre
