On 10/06/2026, Pope Leo XIV blessed and inaugurated the Tower of Jesus Christ at the Sagrada Família in Barcelona, Spain, marking a defining moment in the 144-year construction of Antoni Gaudí’s basilica. The ceremony took place on the 100th anniversary of Gaudí’s death and included a solemn Mass inside the basilica before the Pope blessed the newly completed central tower.
The Tower of Jesus Christ rises 172.5 meters, making the Sagrada Família the tallest church building in the world. Its external completion came after the upper arm of the cross was installed on 20/02/2026. The central tower stands among the basilica’s 18 planned towers, which symbolize the apostles, evangelists, the Virgin Mary, and Jesus Christ.
The inauguration drew Spanish royalty, political leaders, clergy, pilgrims, and large crowds in Barcelona. Reports said more than 100,000 people gathered outside, while thousands attended inside the basilica. Pope Leo XIV praised the building as a work of faith, stone, color, and light, linking the moment to Gaudí’s religious and artistic vision.
Although the central tower has reached its final height, the Sagrada Família is not fully finished. Interior work on the Tower of Jesus Christ is expected to continue through 2027 and 2028, while other parts of the basilica, including the Glory Façade, remain under construction.
Historical Significance:
The blessing of the Tower of Jesus Christ completed the basilica’s highest and most symbolically central element, exactly a century after Gaudí’s death. It turned a long-running construction milestone into a public religious ceremony and permanently changed Barcelona’s skyline.
