BSkyB launched Sky Multichannels as a subscription service, marking a pivotal shift in its business strategy towards a fee-based model. This service provided access not only to Sky's own channels but also to those of third-party broadcasters, expanding the viewing options available to subscribers. The initiative was spearheaded by CEO Sam Chisholm and chairman Rupert Murdoch, reflecting a strategic move to enhance the company's market position in the competitive broadcasting landscape. Initially, the package included four channels that had previously been available for free on Astra's satellites, alongside the introduction of new channels. Within a short period following its launch, BSkyB experienced significant growth, adding 400,000 new subscribers within two months. This surge contributed to a total of 3.5 million households subscribing to the service by mid-1994. The Sky Multichannels service continued to operate until the transition to the Sky Digital platform, which ultimately led to the closure of BSkyB's analogue service. The launch of Sky Multichannels not only transformed BSkyB's operational model but also set the stage for the future of digital broadcasting in the UK, influencing how content was delivered and consumed.
