Sierra Leone's Presidential and Parliamentary Elections Showcase High Voter Turnout and Initial Positive Reception

In August 2007, Sierra Leone conducted its presidential and parliamentary elections, marking a significant moment in the country's democratic journey. The elections witnessed a commendable voter turnout and were initially assessed by official observers as 'free, fair, and credible'. Despite this positive evaluation, no presidential candidate secured the required 50% plus one vote majority in the first round of voting, as mandated by the constitution. Consequently, a run-off election was organized in September 2007. Ernest Bai Koroma, representing the All People's Congress (APC), emerged victorious and was sworn in as president on the same day.
