In August 2007, Sierra Leone conducted its presidential and parliamentary elections, marking a significant moment in the country's democratic journey. The elections witnessed a commendable voter turnout and were initially assessed by official observers as 'free, fair, and credible'. Despite this positive evaluation, no presidential candidate secured the required 50% plus one vote majority in the first round of voting, as mandated by the constitution. Consequently, a run-off election was organized in September 2007. Ernest Bai Koroma, representing the All People's Congress (APC), emerged victorious and was sworn in as president on the same day. During his inauguration at the national stadium in Freetown, President Koroma articulated his commitment to combat corruption and address the mismanagement of Sierra Leone's resources, setting a tone for his administration that would last until 2018. His leadership aimed to restore public trust and foster sustainable development in a nation recovering from years of civil conflict.
