On July 19, 1975, a significant event in Sierra Leone's political history unfolded when 14 senior army and government officials were executed after being convicted of attempting a coup. Among those executed were Brigadier David Lansana, a prominent military figure, and former cabinet ministers Dr. Mohamed Sorie Forna and Ibrahim Bash-Taqi, the latter also known for his work as a journalist. Additionally, Lieutenant Habib Lansana Kamara was among the individuals sentenced to death. This decisive action was part of a broader crackdown on dissent and opposition during the presidency of Siaka Stevens. Following these events, Stevens was re-elected as president in March 1976, a process that occurred without any opposition, further consolidating his power and marking a period of political repression in the country. The executions served as a stark warning to any potential dissenters and highlighted the tense political climate of the time, which was characterized by instability and authoritarian rule.
