The islands of Saint Christopher, Nevis, and Anguilla united as a single entity within the newly established West Indies Federation. The West Indies Federation was created as an attempt to form a political union among various British Caribbean colonies. The federation included ten territories aiming to achieve greater self-governance and eventually independence from British colonial rule.
Saint Christopher, Nevis, and Anguilla brought their distinct local governance structures, economies, and cultural traditions into the federation. The federation's goal was to strengthen economic ties, pool resources, and present a united front in negotiations with the British government. It was seen as a step towards creating a larger political and economic union that could survive the post-colonial era.
The impact of this political union was multifaceted. On one hand, it enabled the smaller islands to participate in a larger regional bloc, which had the potential to amplify their voices in international forums. On the other hand, the federation faced several inherent challenges. The islands had different levels of development, and there were significant economic disparities. Coordination among the territories proved difficult, and there was internal competition rather than collaboration.
In statistical terms, the federation included approximately four million people across all the member territories. However, the viability of the federation was questioned soon after its inception due to these internal tensions and varying political interests. Eventually, the federation was dissolved.
This historic attempt at regional integration, although short-lived, provided valuable lessons for future Caribbean cooperation efforts. It highlighted the potential benefits and challenges of political and economic unions among smaller states.
