On December 26, 1985, renowned American primatologist and conservationist Dian Fossey was found murdered in her cabin at the Karisoke Research Center in the Virunga Mountains of Rwanda. She had been bludgeoned to death with a machete, and her body was discovered in her remote cabin. Her murder shocked the global conservation community and remains unsolved to this day. Dian Fossey had arrived in Rwanda in 1967 and dedicated her life to the study and protection of mountain gorillas, a species that was on the verge of extinction. She founded the Karisoke Research Center, situated between Mount Karisimbi and Mount Bisoke, where she lived closely among the gorillas for nearly two decades. Her groundbreaking research transformed the world’s understanding of gorillas, and her work is widely credited with saving the species from extinction. Fossey fought fiercely against poachers, often destroying their traps and publicly opposing illegal wildlife hunting. This brought her into conflict with local poachers and those involved in the illegal wildlife trade, as well as some elements within the Rwandan authorities, who viewed her activism as disruptive. Her brutal murder is believed to have been linked to her anti-poaching efforts, though the exact circumstances and the identity of her killer remain a mystery. Fossey was buried next to her beloved gorillas at the Karisoke Research Center, a fitting final resting place for someone who had dedicated her life to their survival. Dian Fossey’s life and work were later immortalized in the 1988 film Gorillas in the Mist, based on her autobiography of the same name. Her legacy continues to inspire global conservation efforts and the protection of endangered wildlife, especially the mountain gorillas of Rwanda. #RwandaHistory #DianFossey #GorillaConservation #VirungaMountains #WildlifeProtection #Karisoke #EndangeredSpecies #MomentsOfLife #MoofLife_Moment #MoofLife
