The dissolution of the Soviet Union marked a pivotal moment in global history, resulting in the end of a superpower that had significantly influenced international relations for much of the 20th century. The Soviet Union, established after the Russian Revolution, was a federation of multiple republics, with a centralized government that promoted a communist ideology. By the late 1980s, various factors contributed to its decline, including economic stagnation, political corruption, and a growing desire for independence among its constituent republics. The policies of glasnost (openness) and perestroika (restructuring) introduced by Mikhail Gorbachev aimed to revitalize the economy and encourage political reform but inadvertently accelerated the push for independence among the republics. As nationalist movements gained momentum, the political landscape shifted dramatically, leading to a loss of control by the central government.
