In 1992, civil rights icon Rosa Parks was honored with the Courage of Conscience Award from the Peace Abbey in Sherborn, Massachusetts. The non-monetary award recognized Parks’ lifelong dedication to civil rights, nonviolent activism, community service, and social justice more than three decades after her historic role in the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The Peace Abbey Courage of Conscience Award is presented to individuals and organizations whose actions demonstrate a commitment to peace, human dignity, and moral leadership. Rosa Parks received the recognition as an elder stateswoman of the Civil Rights Movement and as a continuing advocate for equality and nonviolent social change in the United States. By 1992, Parks had become internationally known for refusing to surrender her seat to a white passenger on a segregated bus in Montgomery, Alabama, on 01/12/1955. Her arrest helped trigger the Montgomery Bus Boycott, a 381-day protest against racial segregation that became one of the foundational campaigns of the modern Civil Rights Movement. However, the award also acknowledged her decades of activism beyond Montgomery, including educational outreach, youth mentorship, and public advocacy during her later years in Detroit. The honor came during a period in which Parks was increasingly recognized by academic institutions, civic organizations, and historical societies for her broader contributions to American public life. Throughout the early 1990s, she continued participating in lectures, community events, and programs through the Rosa and Raymond Parks Institute for Self Development, which promoted leadership and educational opportunities for young people. The Peace Abbey, founded as an interfaith center dedicated to peace and justice initiatives, had previously recognized prominent humanitarian and civil rights figures whose work reflected principles of nonviolence and ethical public action. Parks’ selection aligned with the organization’s emphasis on peaceful resistance and civic responsibility. Why This Moment Matters : The Courage of Conscience Award reflected how Rosa Parks’ influence extended far beyond a single historic protest and continued through decades of advocacy, education, and community engagement. The recognition also connected the Civil Rights Movement’s philosophy of nonviolent resistance to broader international conversations about peace and human rights.
