In the mid-8th century BCE, the legendary Battle of Alba Longa marked the downfall of King Amulius, a usurper who had seized the throne of the Latin city from his brother Numitor. Amulius had exiled Numitor and forced his niece, Rhea Silvia, into becoming a Vestal Virgin to prevent rival heirs. However, she gave birth to Romulus and Remus, who survived against the odds and were raised in secret.
As adults, the twins discovered their royal lineage. In alliance with the restored Numitor, Romulus gathered a warband to challenge Amulius's rule. In the resulting conflict, Amulius and his sons were slain, ending his tyrannical reign. Numitor was reinstated as king of Alba Longa, and Romulus and Remus went on to found Rome shortly after, traditionally dated to 753 BCE.
Though semi-legendary, this moment symbolized the beginning of Rome’s mythic destiny and the downfall of corrupt monarchy in favor of rightful rule.
