In the Clearing, published in 1962 by Holt, Rinehart and Winston, was the final poetry collection released during Robert Frost’s lifetime. The book appeared when Frost was 88 years old and followed a long sequence of volumes beginning with A Boy’s Will in 1913. The collection includes poems written in Frost’s later years and reflects his continued use of conversational blank verse, rural imagery, and philosophical reflection. Among the poems in the volume are “Kitty Hawk,” “For John F. Kennedy His Inauguration,” and “The Draft Horse,” which engage with themes of history, national identity, aging, and memory. The publication came during a period of public recognition for Frost in the early 1960s. He had read at President John F. Kennedy’s inauguration in January 1961 and received the Congressional Gold Medal in March 1962. In the Clearing was released later that same year, becoming the last collection issued before his death on 29/01/1963. The volume concludes with the poem “Kitty Hawk,” which reflects on technological change and the passage of time, echoing the reflective tone that characterizes much of Frost’s late work.
