In early January 2023, Prince Harry, the Duke of Sussex, publicly expressed a desire to repair his relationship with senior members of the royal family during a series of televised interviews released shortly before the publication of his memoir Spare. In one widely broadcast interview, he stated, “I would like to get my father back, I would like to have my brother back,” referring to King Charles III and his brother, Prince William.
The remarks were made during interviews aired between 08/01/2023 and 09/01/2023, including conversations with ITV in the United Kingdom and CBS’s 60 Minutes in the United States. These appearances formed part of the media rollout ahead of Spare, which was officially published on 10/01/2023. During the interviews, Prince Harry discussed ongoing tensions within the royal family, as well as issues related to media coverage, privacy, and personal experiences described in the book.
The statement drew attention as it directly addressed his strained relationships with close family members following his and Meghan Markle’s decision to step back from official royal duties in 2020. While the interviews included critical observations about royal institutions and press interactions, Prince Harry also emphasized that he wanted reconciliation. The interviews were widely covered by international media and contributed to public discussion surrounding the content of Spare and the state of familial relations within the British royal family at that time.
