In 1995, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was appointed Senior Pilot of 815 Naval Air Squadron, a key Fleet Air Arm unit based at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Portland in the United Kingdom. At the time, 815 Squadron was the largest flying unit within the Fleet Air Arm, operating a substantial number of aircraft and personnel. As Senior Pilot, Prince Andrew’s role focused on overseeing flying standards and maintaining operational effectiveness across the squadron. His responsibilities included supervision of a unit comprising more than 80 aircrew and approximately 420 ground personnel, along with a fleet of 41 helicopters. The position required coordination of training, operational readiness, and adherence to safety and performance protocols within one of the Royal Navy’s most active aviation units. This appointment followed his earlier command of HMS Cottesmore, a Hunt-class mine countermeasures vessel, from 1993 to 1994. The move to 815 Naval Air Squadron represented a continuation of his active naval career, with a shift toward aviation leadership and operational oversight within a large-scale unit. Prince Andrew held the Senior Pilot position from 1995 to 1996. After completing this assignment, he transitioned to staff roles, including work at the Ministry of Defence in 1997. He remained in naval service until his retirement from the Active List in 2001, concluding a career that included both sea command and aviation responsibilities. #PrinceAndrew #RoyalNavy #FleetAirArm #NavalAviation #UKMilitary
