Prince Andrew announced on 17/10/2025 that he would no longer use his royal titles and honours, including the title Duke of York, following discussions with King Charles III and other members of the British royal family. The statement was released through Buckingham Palace amid continued scrutiny over Andrew’s association with the late convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein and allegations made by Virginia Giuffre.
In his statement, Andrew said the ongoing accusations against him had become “a distraction” from the work of the monarchy. He stated that he had agreed with King Charles that stepping further away from public royal life was necessary. Andrew also confirmed he would stop using honours connected to the Order of the Garter and the Royal Victorian Order. Although he ceased using the titles publicly, legal experts noted that peerages such as Duke of York can only formally be removed through parliamentary or constitutional procedures.
Prince Andrew had already withdrawn from public royal duties in 2019 after a widely criticised BBC Newsnight interview about his relationship with Epstein. In 2022, Queen Elizabeth II removed his military affiliations and royal patronages after Virginia Giuffre filed a civil sexual assault lawsuit against him in the United States. Andrew denied wrongdoing and settled the case without admitting liability.
The 2025 announcement marked another reduction in Andrew’s public role within the monarchy. Reports following the decision indicated that official royal websites and public references were updated to reflect the change. His ex-wife Sarah Ferguson also stopped using the title Duchess of York publicly after the announcement.
Why This Moment Matters
Prince Andrew’s decision to stop using the Duke of York title reflected the continuing efforts by Buckingham Palace to distance the monarchy from controversies connected to the Epstein scandal. The move also highlighted the limits of royal authority over hereditary peerages, since the title itself technically remained in existence despite no longer being used publicly.
