On 13/01/2022, Buckingham Palace announced that Prince Andrew, Duke of York, would no longer use the style “His Royal Highness” (HRH) in any official capacity, following approval by Queen Elizabeth II. The decision was confirmed in a formal statement and marked a clear change in his status within the Royal Family amid ongoing legal proceedings in the United States at the time.
The Palace stated that Prince Andrew would defend his civil sexual assault case as a private citizen rather than as a representative of the monarchy. This clarification separated his legal matters from any official royal role. The announcement also confirmed that all of his military affiliations and royal patronages were returned to the Queen, allowing them to be reassigned to other members of the Royal Family. Among the roles relinquished was his position as Colonel of the Grenadier Guards.
In addition, the statement formalized that Prince Andrew would continue not to undertake any public duties, reinforcing his withdrawal from official royal life that had begun in 2019. While he agreed to stop using the HRH style in an official context, he technically retained the title itself, similar to arrangements previously applied to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle in 2020.
This development represented a formal restructuring of Prince Andrew’s role, removing his remaining official functions and defining his position as separate from the working Royal Family.
