In 1989, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, was appointed Flight Commander and pilot of a Lynx HAS3 helicopter aboard the Royal Navy frigate HMS Campbeltown. This posting marked a key operational phase in his naval career, which spanned over two decades, and placed him in charge of the ship’s aviation unit during active deployments.
As Flight Commander, Prince Andrew was responsible for overseeing the helicopter detachment assigned to HMS Campbeltown. His duties included managing flight operations, supervising maintenance of the Lynx helicopter, and coordinating aviation support for the ship’s missions. The role required both operational flying and leadership responsibilities within the ship’s command structure.
Between 1990 and 1991, HMS Campbeltown served as the flagship of the Standing Naval Force Atlantic (STANAVFORLANT), a permanent multinational NATO maritime group. During this period, Prince Andrew also took on the role of Force Aviation Officer for the task force, expanding his responsibilities beyond the individual ship to support coordinated aviation operations across the fleet.
While serving aboard HMS Campbeltown, he achieved a professional milestone by passing the Royal Navy’s Squadron Command Examination on 16/07/1991. This qualification was a necessary step toward higher command roles within the Navy. His appointment followed an earlier posting on HMS Edinburgh, where he served as Officer of the Watch and Assistant Navigating Officer, including a deployment to the Far East.
After completing his service on HMS Campbeltown in 1991, Prince Andrew attended the Staff College at Camberley in 1992. He later went on to command the minehunter HMS Cottesmore in 1993, continuing his progression within the Royal Navy.
