In 1982, Prince Andrew, then serving as a Sub-Lieutenant in the Royal Navy, completed his operational flying training and entered active service as a frontline helicopter pilot, coinciding with the outbreak of the Falklands War. His transition from training to combat operations marked a defining period in his naval career during a major conflict between the United Kingdom and Argentina.
After initial flying instruction at Royal Naval Air Station (RNAS) Culdrose, where he trained on the Gazelle helicopter, Prince Andrew advanced to operational training on the Sea King helicopter. By early 1982, he had completed this phase and was assigned to 820 Naval Air Squadron, operating from the aircraft carrier HMS Invincible. On 05/04/1982, shortly after Argentina’s invasion of the Falkland Islands, HMS Invincible sailed for the South Atlantic as part of the British task force.
During the conflict, Prince Andrew served as a co-pilot on Sea King helicopters, carrying out a range of operational missions. These included anti-submarine warfare patrols, anti-surface surveillance, and search and rescue operations. Among the more hazardous duties were missions involving the use of helicopters as radar decoys against incoming Exocet missiles. In such operations, helicopters would position themselves to attract missile targeting systems away from the carrier before maneuvering to evade impact.
On 25/05/1982, Prince Andrew took part in rescue efforts following the attack on the container ship SS Atlantic Conveyor, which was struck by an Exocet missile. The ship’s loss resulted in multiple casualties and the destruction of vital military supplies, and search and rescue teams worked to recover survivors from the incident.
His deployment to an active war zone drew attention within the UK government due to the risks involved for a member of the Royal Family. However, Queen Elizabeth II decided that he would remain with his unit for the duration of the campaign. The Falklands War concluded in June 1982 with the surrender of Argentine forces.
