Following the death of Queen Elizabeth II on 08/09/2022, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, took part in several public events during the official mourning period, despite having stepped back from royal duties and losing his military roles and patronages earlier that year. His appearances formed part of family-led ceremonies and traditions associated with the Queen’s death and funeral. On 10/09/2022, Prince Andrew made his first public appearance at Balmoral in Scotland, where he joined his siblings, Princess Anne and Prince Edward, along with his daughters, Princesses Beatrice and Eugenie, for a service at Crathie Kirk. After the service, he met members of the public gathered outside Balmoral Castle and viewed floral tributes. During this interaction, he told mourners, “We’ve been allowed one day, now we start the process of handing her on.” Two days later, on 12/09/2022, he participated in a ceremonial procession in Edinburgh, walking behind the Queen’s coffin as it was transferred from the Palace of Holyroodhouse to St Giles’ Cathedral. During this procession, a bystander directed remarks toward him and was subsequently detained by police. On 14/09/2022, Prince Andrew again joined members of the Royal Family, including King Charles III, Princess Anne, Prince Edward, Prince William, and Prince Harry, in a procession in London as the coffin was moved from Buckingham Palace to Westminster Hall for the lying-in-state. On 16/09/2022, he took part in the Vigil of the Princes at Westminster Hall, standing alongside his siblings at the four corners of the Queen’s coffin for a 15-minute period of silent vigil. This ceremonial role, traditionally reserved for senior royals, marked one of the few occasions during the mourning period where he appeared in a formal setting linked to royal duties. Prince Andrew also attended the state funeral on 19/09/2022 at Westminster Abbey, followed by the committal service at St George’s Chapel in Windsor. His participation throughout these events reflected his position as a member of the immediate royal family, distinct from his previously held official roles. #PrinceAndrew #QueenElizabethII #RoyalFamily #StateFuneral #UKMonarchy
