In October 2022, following the accession of King Charles III, changes to the financial arrangements of Prince Andrew, Duke of York, reflected his transition away from official royal duties. The adjustments followed earlier developments in January 2022, when he was stripped of his military affiliations and royal patronages and ceased using the style “His Royal Highness” in an official capacity.
Prince Andrew had already stopped receiving funds from the Sovereign Grant in 2019 after stepping back from public duties. The Sovereign Grant is allocated to support the official work of the monarchy and maintain royal residences, and it does not extend to non-working members of the royal family. By late 2022, further changes were reported regarding his personal security. His publicly funded police protection, which had provided round-the-clock coverage, was withdrawn. For a period, King Charles III is reported to have privately funded his security, with estimates placing the cost at around £3 million annually, though this arrangement was later discontinued.
Additional financial adjustments reportedly included the cessation of a private annual allowance of approximately £1 million from the Duchy of Lancaster, a source of income traditionally associated with the monarch’s private estate. This move was linked to broader efforts to redefine Prince Andrew’s position within the royal household. At the same time, his known sources of income included a Royal Navy pension, estimated at around £20,000 per year, alongside private financial interests.
Subsequent reports into late 2025 and early 2026 indicated that new arrangements were being discussed concerning his residence and financial support. These included a potential one-off relocation payment and a private annual stipend from the King’s personal funds in connection with a move to alternative accommodation within the royal estate, such as Sandringham.
