In 1989, Prince Andrew, Duke of York, completed his службу aboard the Royal Navy Type 42 destroyer HMS Edinburgh, where he had been stationed since 1988. His time on the vessel formed part of his active naval career during a period of operational deployments and advancing responsibilities.
While serving on HMS Edinburgh, Prince Andrew held the roles of Officer of the Watch and Assistant Navigating Officer. These positions involved overseeing the ship’s navigation, safety, and day-to-day operational duties while at sea. As Officer of the Watch, he was responsible for the ship during assigned periods, ensuring adherence to navigational protocols and operational readiness.
During his tenure, HMS Edinburgh undertook a significant six-month deployment to the Far East as part of Exercise Outback 88, a multinational naval exercise involving allied forces. This deployment contributed to regional naval cooperation and provided operational experience for the ship’s crew, including Prince Andrew in his assigned roles.
After completing his service aboard HMS Edinburgh in 1989, Prince Andrew transitioned to HMS Campbeltown. There, he served as a flight commander and pilot, operating a Lynx HAS3 helicopter until 1991. This move reflected a continuation of his dual career path within the Royal Navy, combining both seagoing and aviation responsibilities.
