In 2003, Dr. Phil McGraw entered into a licensing agreement with CSA Nutraceuticals, a Texas-based start-up, to launch a line of nutritional supplements branded as Shape Up. This product line included vitamin packets, meal replacement drinks, and power bars, with a portion of the sales proceeds designated for the Dr. Phil Foundation, which focuses on combating childhood obesity. However, the venture faced significant legal challenges. In 2004, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) initiated an investigation into CSA Nutraceuticals for false advertising claims related to the effectiveness of the supplements. This scrutiny led to the cessation of production of the Shape Up products. Subsequently, three consumers filed a lawsuit against CSA Nutraceuticals, alleging that the company made misleading and unproven claims about its products. The legal battle culminated in a settlement in 2006, where CSA Nutraceuticals agreed to pay $10.5 million to resolve the claims.
