In May 2008, Peru officially joined the Union of South American Nations (UNASUR), a regional organization aimed at promoting integration and cooperation among South American countries. This membership marked a significant step for Peru in enhancing its diplomatic relations and fostering collaboration on various issues, including economic development, social policies, and security. The formation of UNASUR was a response to the need for a unified approach to regional challenges and opportunities, allowing member states to work together more effectively. Peru's participation in this organization reflects its commitment to regional solidarity and its desire to play an active role in South American affairs. Under the leadership of then-President Alan García, Peru sought to strengthen its ties with neighboring countries and contribute to the collective efforts of the region. The Union of South American Nations has since served as a platform for dialogue and cooperation, addressing critical issues such as infrastructure development, environmental sustainability, and social inclusion across the continent.
