On July 10, 1904, the Liberal Revolution erupted in Paraguay, marking the beginning of a major political shift. For over 30 years, the Colorado Party had maintained an authoritarian grip on the country, fueling growing dissatisfaction among opposition groups. Led by the Liberal Party, revolutionaries launched an armed uprising against the government of President Juan Antonio Escurra, seeking to end Colorado dominance and establish a more democratic system.
The revolution quickly gained momentum, with battles erupting across the country. After months of intense fighting, the Liberals, backed by Argentine support, forced Escurra to resign on December 9, 1904. This victory marked the end of Colorado rule and the beginning of a new political era. The Liberal Party took control, governing Paraguay for the next three decades.
While the revolution successfully overthrew the old regime, Paraguay continued to face internal divisions, economic struggles, and political instability in the years that followed. However, the Liberal Revolution of 1904 remains a defining moment in Paraguayan history, symbolizing the fight for political change and the struggle for democracy.
