In July 2022, Papua New Guinea held its national general elections, a crucial political event marked by both progress and controversy. Despite facing widespread criticism over poor electoral preparations, allegations of voter intimidation, violence, and electoral irregularities, Prime Minister James Marape’s PANGU Party emerged victorious, securing the most parliamentary seats. This paved the way for Marape’s re-election as Prime Minister, further solidifying his leadership amidst a politically turbulent landscape. The election period, however, was marred by unrest in several regions, raising concerns from both local and international observers about the integrity of the electoral process and the need for reforms to ensure free and fair elections in the future.
Amidst these challenges, the 2022 elections also brought a historic breakthrough for women’s political representation in Papua New Guinea. After a decade-long absence of female voices in Parliament, two women were elected—Rufina Peter and Kessy Sawang. Rufina Peter’s election was particularly significant, as she became the Provincial Governor of Central Province, marking a notable achievement in a nation where cultural and structural barriers have long hindered women’s political participation. Their victories symbolized a hopeful step toward gender inclusivity in Papua New Guinea’s political arena, inspiring ongoing efforts to promote female leadership and break down barriers that have kept women underrepresented for decades.
