During the early 1830s, the Isthmus of Panama sought to assert its independence, with General Alzuru appointed as the supreme military commander. His administration, however, faced significant opposition due to allegations of abuse and mismanagement. Colonel Tomás de Herrera emerged as a key figure opposing Alzuru, leading forces that ultimately challenged his authority. The conflict culminated in a decisive confrontation, where Alzuru was defeated and subsequently executed. This event marked a pivotal moment in the region's political landscape, leading to the reestablishment of ties with New Granada, which had implications for the future governance and stability of the Isthmus.
