Following the death of Kim Jong-il on December 17, 2011, Kim Jong-un was officially declared Supreme Leader of North Korea. This marked the first hereditary transfer of power in a nuclear-armed state and the continuation of the Kim dynasty’s rule.
On December 19, 2011, North Korean state media announced Kim Jong-il’s passing and declared Kim Jong-un as the "Great Successor". Just days later, on December 30, 2011, he was formally appointed Supreme Commander of the Korean People's Army, the highest military position in the country.
