The Nokia 3310 was released on 01/09/2000, becoming one of the most recognizable mobile phone models of the early 2000s. Announced at the CeBIT trade show in Germany earlier that year, the device was introduced as an upgrade to the Nokia 3210 and was designed for mass-market use. It operated on GSM networks and supported core features such as voice calls and SMS messaging, during a period when mobile phone adoption was rapidly increasing worldwide.
The device featured a monochrome display, physical keypad, and an internal antenna, which improved durability compared to earlier models with external antennas. It included several built-in applications such as a calculator, stopwatch, and the game Snake II, an updated version of the original Snake. The Nokia 3310 also introduced customizable SMS features, including predictive text input and the ability to create and send longer concatenated messages. Users could personalize the phone with interchangeable Xpress-on covers, contributing to its widespread appeal.
Nokia sold approximately 126 million units of the 3310 worldwide, making it one of the best-selling mobile phones of all time. Its reputation for long battery life and robust construction led to continued usage in many regions even after newer smartphone technologies emerged. The device remained in production until around 2005, by which time it had become a common entry-level mobile phone across Europe, Asia, and other markets.
