On 16/02/2021, Nestlé S.A. announced that it had agreed to sell its regional spring water brands, purified water business, and beverage delivery service operations in the United States and Canada to One Rock Capital Partners in partnership with Metropoulos & Co. for $4.3 billion. The transaction marked a major restructuring of Nestlé’s North American bottled water operations and reflected a broader shift in the company’s global water business strategy. The divestment included well-known regional spring water brands such as Poland Spring®, Deer Park®, Ozarka®, Ice Mountain®, Zephyrhills®, and Arrowhead®, along with Nestlé’s purified water and home-office beverage delivery services in North America. Nestlé stated that the deal excluded its international premium brands, including Perrier®, S.Pellegrino®, and Acqua Panna®, as well as its functional and flavored water products. Nestlé explained that the sale would allow the company to focus more heavily on premium mineral water, functional hydration, and health-oriented beverage categories, which generally carried higher growth potential and stronger profit margins. The transaction aligned with Nestlé’s broader portfolio optimization strategy under Chief Executive Officer Mark Schneider, who had overseen several acquisitions and divestments aimed at concentrating the company on faster-growing product segments. The North American bottled water business had faced increasing operational costs, environmental scrutiny related to plastic packaging and groundwater extraction, and intense competition in lower-margin mass-market water categories. By narrowing its focus to premium and functional hydration brands, Nestlé aimed to strengthen its global positioning in wellness-oriented beverage markets. The transaction was completed later in 2021 after receiving regulatory approvals. Following the acquisition, the North American water business was renamed BlueTriton Brands. Why This Moment Matters The sale demonstrated how large consumer goods companies were reshaping portfolios toward higher-margin and health-focused categories. It also reflected changing market dynamics in the bottled water industry, where premiumization and functional wellness products were becoming increasingly important drivers of growth.
