On 30/04/2021, Nestlé announced that it had entered into a definitive agreement to acquire the core brands of The Bountiful Company from global investment firm KKR for $5.75 billion. The transaction was completed on 09/08/2021 through Nestlé Health Science, significantly expanding Nestlé’s position in the global vitamins, minerals, herbals, and supplements (VMHS) market.
The acquisition included several major consumer health brands, most notably Nature’s Bounty®, Solgar®, Osteo Bi-Flex®, Puritan’s Pride®, and Ester-C®. These brands operated across multiple distribution channels including mass retail, specialty stores, e-commerce platforms, and direct-to-consumer sales. Nestlé stated that the deal aligned with its broader strategy of strengthening its health and nutrition portfolio beyond traditional food and beverage categories.
At the time of the acquisition announcement, The Bountiful Company’s brands had a strong presence in the United States and international nutrition markets. Nestlé Health Science described the transaction as a major step in expanding its consumer health business, particularly in nutritional supplements and preventive wellness products. The company also emphasized the growing global demand for vitamins and nutritional supplements, which accelerated during the COVID-19 pandemic as consumer interest in health and immunity products increased.
Nestlé Health Science had already been investing heavily in medical nutrition, personalized health, and nutritional science before the acquisition. By adding The Bountiful Company’s core supplement brands, Nestlé strengthened its market reach across both premium specialty nutrition products and mass-market wellness categories. The transaction also broadened the company’s direct engagement with consumers through digital commerce and subscription-based supplement sales.
The acquisition closed on 09/08/2021 after receiving the required regulatory approvals. Following completion, Nestlé Health Science positioned itself as one of the largest global players in the VMHS industry, competing across a rapidly expanding international supplements market.
Why This Moment Matters
The acquisition reflected Nestlé’s long-term shift toward health science and consumer wellness businesses beyond conventional packaged foods. It also highlighted how large multinational companies were increasing investments in preventive health, nutritional supplements, and direct-to-consumer wellness products during a period of rising global health awareness.
