The Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company had been founded in Switzerland in 1866 by American brothers George and Charles Page. The company initially specialized in condensed milk production, using techniques inspired by the growing dairy preservation industry in the United States. By the 1870s, condensed milk had become increasingly popular because it could be stored longer and transported more easily than fresh milk. Anglo-Swiss built factories in Switzerland and expanded distribution across Europe. Henri Nestlé’s company had already gained attention for its infant food product known as Farine Lactée, introduced in the 1860s as a nutritional option for babies who could not be breastfed. When Anglo-Swiss entered the baby food market in 1877, the two companies began competing more directly for consumers interested in dairy-based nutrition products. Both firms expanded production capacity, distribution networks, and international sales during the following decades. The rivalry between Nestlé and Anglo-Swiss continued through the late 19th century as both businesses diversified into overlapping product categories. Competition included condensed milk, infant nutrition products, and related dairy foods. Despite the commercial rivalry, the companies eventually moved toward cooperation in the early 20th century. In 1905, Nestlé and the Anglo-Swiss Condensed Milk Company formally merged, creating the foundation of the modern Nestlé corporation.
