Formation of The Elders on Mandela's Birthday

On 18/07/2007, former South African President Nelson Mandela officially announced the formation of The Elders during his 89th birthday celebration in Johannesburg, South Africa. The initiative brought together a group of internationally respected leaders, peace advocates, and human rights figures who aimed to address some of the world’s most difficult global challenges through independent diplomacy, mediation, and public advocacy. Mandela introduced The Elders as a collective of experienced global leaders who could use their influence and moral authority to support peace, justice, and humanitarian causes without being tied to national political interests.
