On May 21, 2018, renowned astrophysicist, cosmologist, and author Neil deGrasse Tyson was awarded an honorary Doctor of Humane Letters by Yale University during its 317th commencement ceremony. At the time, Tyson served as the Frederick P. Rose Director of the Hayden Planetarium at the American Museum of Natural History in New York City. Yale recognized Tyson for his exceptional ability to transcend the research community and promote a broader understanding of science, acknowledging him as one of the most influential scientists of our time.
In the same ceremony, Yale honored nine other distinguished individuals, including actress Angela Bassett, jazz musician Willie Ruff, and theologian Rowan Williams.
