In May 1970, Neil Armstrong, made a significant visit to the Soviet Union to present a talk at the 13th annual conference of the International Committee on Space Research. Arriving in Leningrad from Poland, Armstrong then traveled to Moscow, where he had the honor of meeting Premier Alexei Kosygin. During his visit, Armstrong became the first westerner to witness the supersonic Tupolev Tu-144, a remarkable feat of Soviet engineering. He was also given a tour of the Yuri Gagarin Cosmonaut Training Center, which he described as 'a bit Victorian in nature,' highlighting the unique blend of history and modernity in the facility. The day concluded with Armstrong viewing a delayed video of the launch of Soyuz 9, an event he was unaware was occurring, despite being hosted by Valentina Tereshkova, the first woman in space, whose husband, Andriyan Nikolayev, was aboard the mission. This visit not only underscored the importance of international collaboration in space exploration but also marked a pivotal moment in the ongoing space race between the United States and the Soviet Union. #mooflife #mof #MomentOfLife #NeilArmstrong #SovietUnion #SpaceExploration #TupolevTu-144 #YuriGagarinCosmonautTrainingCenter
