In the 1830s, Jonker Afrikaner, a prominent leader of the Oorlams, established a crucial agreement with Nama chief Oaseb. This agreement was primarily aimed at creating a defensive alliance against the Herero, who were advancing southward into the central grasslands of Namibia. The Oorlams, under Afrikaner's leadership, were tasked with protecting these vital grasslands from Herero encroachment. In exchange for this protection, Jonker Afrikaner was recognized as the overlord of the Nama people, which solidified his authority in the region. He also received tribute from the Nama, which further enhanced his power and resources. This arrangement allowed Afrikaner to settle in what is now known as Windhoek, strategically located on the borders of Herero territory, setting the stage for future conflicts between the Oorlams and the Herero as both groups vied for control over the land and resources in the area.
