Uncovering a Russian-Backed Coup Attempt

An attempted coup in Moldova was uncovered involving Russian-backed actors aiming to destabilize the government. The plan included the use of saboteurs with military training disguised as civilians to execute attacks on state buildings and take hostages. The objective was to overthrow the Moldovan government and establish a puppet regime. This operation reportedly involved collaboration between criminal organizations and two exiled Moldovan oligarchs. President Sandu indicated that individuals from Russia, Montenegro, Belarus, and Serbia were to enter Moldova to incite protests as part of the coup strategy. Moldovan intelligence suggested that foreign provocateurs would be deployed to instigate violent unrest during the anti-government demonstrations. The Moldovan government acknowledged the assistance of Ukrainian partners in revealing critical locations and logistical details of the coup plot, highlighting the international dimensions of the threat.
