The Moldavian Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic (Moldavian ASSR) was established as an upgrade from the Moldavian Autonomous Oblast. This transition occurred seven months after the initial formation of the oblast, reflecting the Soviet Union's strategy to create autonomous regions for various ethnic groups. Despite being designated as a republic, the demographic composition of the Moldavian ASSR was predominantly non-Romanian, with only 30% of its population identifying as ethnic Romanian. The capital of the republic was initially located in Balta, which served as the administrative center until it was relocated to Tiraspol. This move was part of a broader effort to consolidate administrative functions and enhance governance within the region. The establishment of the Moldavian ASSR was significant in the context of Soviet nationalities policy, which aimed to manage the diverse ethnic landscape of the USSR by granting varying degrees of autonomy to different groups.
