In 09/2021, Microsoft expanded its digital media and education offerings by announcing acquisitions of Clipchamp and TakeLessons, two startups focused on video creation and online learning. The deals were disclosed within days of each other and reflected Microsoft’s effort to strengthen consumer and productivity services tied to Microsoft 365 and Windows. Clipchamp added browser-based video editing capabilities, while TakeLessons expanded Microsoft’s reach into virtual instruction and skills learning.
Microsoft announced the acquisition of Clipchamp on 08/09/2021. Clipchamp provided web-based video editing tools designed for creators, businesses, and educators, including templates, screen recording, and export features. Microsoft said the service would be integrated into Microsoft 365 and Windows experiences to enable built-in video creation. Clipchamp later became part of Windows 11 as a default video editor, replacing legacy tools and supporting cloud-based editing workflows.
On 15/09/2021, Microsoft announced the acquisition of TakeLessons, an online learning marketplace offering live instruction across subjects including music, languages, academics, and professional skills. TakeLessons also operated a platform connecting instructors with students for virtual classes and educational content.
