Battle of Kirina and Rise of Mali Empire

The Battle of Kirina, fought in 1235, marked a pivotal moment in West African history as it resulted in a decisive victory for the Mandinka people led by the exiled prince Sundiata Keita. This battle effectively dismantled the Sosso Empire, which had been a dominant force in the region. Following this victory, Sundiata Keita established the Mali Empire along the upper Niger River. The Mali Empire flourished and reached its zenith in the 14th century, becoming a significant center for trade and Islamic scholarship. Notable cities such as Djenné and Timbuktu emerged as hubs of commerce and learning, attracting scholars and traders from across the Islamic world. However, the empire eventually faced decline due to internal strife and political intrigue, paving the way for the rise of the Songhai Empire. The Songhai, which had been a powerful entity under Mali's rule, ultimately supplanted the Mali Empire, continuing the legacy of trade and culture in West Africa.
