In the early 17th century, the Maldives found itself under new governance. Initially, the Maldives fell under the protectorate of the Dutch, who were ruling over Ceylon (present-day Sri Lanka) during this time. The Dutch, expanding their colonial reach in the Indian Ocean region, extended their influence over the Maldives in order to control the critical maritime routes and bolster their trading network.
The governance transfer to the Dutch came primarily through diplomacy and agreements, rather than outright conquest. The local sultans retained nominal control but had to pay tribute to the Dutch administration, thus integrating the Maldives into the broader economic and political schemes of the Dutch East India Company.
Several decades later, another shift occurred. The British Empire, increasingly dominant in maritime trade and colonial administration, took over the protectorate from the Dutch. This transition was part of broader strategic maneuvers as European powers vied for influence in key colonial territories. Under British protection, the Maldives continued to operate with a degree of internal autonomy, with their own local leaders maintaining authority over daily governance. However, they were obligated to align with British military and economic interests.
The impact of becoming a protectorate shaped the Maldives’ political landscape and foreign relations. During these protectorates, infrastructure, trade networks, and external relations were heavily influenced by European policies. While local governance structures remained, significant decisions were swayed by the ambitions of the Dutch and British.
The transition under these protectorates laid the foundation for the Maldives' later interactions with global powers. It became an essential node in the broader network of colonial territories and an example of the geopolitical dynamics of the time.
