Bukit China, also known as Chinese Hill, was transformed into a cemetery under the auspices of the local Chinese community in Malacca. During the early establishment, the area was earmarked by the Sultanate of Malacca as a dwelling for the entourage of the Chinese princess, Hang Li Po. However, it later evolved into a significant burial ground reflecting the community's cultural and religious practices.
Bukit China encompasses approximately fifty hectares and has seen the construction of numerous tombs. Among these, the oldest dates back several centuries, emphasizing its historical importance. Its creation was rooted in the cultural need for a dedicated space that fit traditional Chinese geomancy (feng shui) principles.
The establishment of this cemetery played a critical role in embedding Chinese cultural heritage in Malacca. It became a symbol of stability and continuity for the Chinese settlers, fostering a sense of belonging. The layout and tomb designs are intertwined with classical Chinese architecture, featuring intricate inscriptions and artistic motifs.
Economically, the cemetery influenced local trades related to stone carving, masonry, and traditional Chinese burial rituals. This created employment and sustained various artisanal skills in the region. Furthermore, it has since become a popular site for historical tourism, drawing visitors interested in the historical ties between China and Malacca.
Bukit China also serves as an ecological haven, housing a variety of plant species and functioning as a green lung for the city. It is evident that its establishment is not just a cultural milestone but also a contributor to preserving biodiversity.
To sum up, Bukit China Cemetery stands as a historical testament to cultural preservation, socio-economic impact, and environmental significance in Malacca.
